Médecins Sans Frontières is an independent, international medical and humanitarian organization that provides care to people in need, people affected by natural or man-made disasters, and victims of armed conflict, without discrimination and without regard to race, religion, creed or political affiliation (MSF Charter).
The UREPH (Research Unit on Humanitarian Stakes and Practices) of Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) Switzerland was created in 2006 and aims to improve the way MSF projects are implemented in the field and to participate in critical thinking on humanitarian and medical action, notably by producing publications and organizing conferences and debates. The UREPH conducts research with the objective of improving the understanding of operational issues, along with contributing to analytical and reflective positioning on humanitarian stakes and practices. Ongoing research projects explore the implications of artificial intelligence in warfare; challenges associated with evacuations; security-related dilemmas, with a specific focus on duty of care, informed consent and the right to withdraw.
The UREPH intern will work under the supervision of a dedicated UREPH team member and in close collaboration with the entire team, to provide support on the different ongoing research projects, as well as for ad hoc requests. The work is expected to include data sourcing and gathering, information synthesis, assisting researchers in preparing and conducting qualitative interviews, drafting briefs.
Being involved in different desk research on topical areas of interest will give the intern exposure to a range of issues MSF (and the humanitarian sector at large) is confronted to in its daily work in the field. It is an opportunity to learn about the various ethical dimensions of humanitarian action, as well as to gain insight into how MSF approaches duty of care, risk management, and other operational challenges. Working in close collaboration with other researchers will allow the intern to strengthen their qualitative research skills.
